OpenAI Allocates INR 1.28 Cr API Grants to Indian Non-Profits: See the Selected 11

OpenAI recently made huge investments initiative into the social sector in India as the men let go INR 128 lakh or USD 150K of API grants across 11 non profit organisations.

Provided as API credits for the next stage of OpenAI’s global “AI for Impact Accelerator Program” - which now sits under the OpenAI Academy banner. The initiative is designed to provide Indian non-profits with the tools and resources they need to innovate and make a meaningful impact on society by accelerating advances in AI.

Chosen organizations will receive technical support, early access to OpenAI’s latest tools, and take part in cohort-based learning to scale their impact. The program is being executed in collaboration with The Agency Fund, Tech4Dev, and Turn. io, creating collective intelligence for AI-based social innovation.

The 11 charities selected to receive donations from this impactful campaign include:

These are organizations that are doing work on education, health, agriculture, disability access, gender equality. Their disruptive AI-based technology, funded by grants from OpenAI will provide scalable and local solutions to underserved communities on a pan India basis.”

Pragya Misra, Policy & Partnerships Lead, OpenAI India, highlighted that India is at the forefront of multi-cultural AI innovation, saying, “These organisations are addressing some of the country’s toughest problems with innovation, empathy.

The AI for Impact Accelerator (now part of OpenAI Academy) is our effort to learn from them while also ensuring that frontier technology is being shaped by and in service of real communities.”

The move towards an AI, driving digital transformation of country’s traditions and culture is strongly in-line with “India AI Mission” to democratize AI access, create a robust local AI ecosystem and develop solutions for social, economic, and inclusive growth spurs.

The news also arrives as India has overtaken the US as the biggest user base for ChatGPT, highlighting how quickly people in the country are adopting AI.

OpenAI’s investment in India will not be limited to the grants announced, as reports state that it has plans to develop a data centre and provide data residency for its API and enterprise customers in India, these moves cementing its presence and investment into the Indian market.
