Belgium Cybersecurity Alert: Parliament Services Targeted in Major Breach
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A major cyberattack has been affecting the IT infrastructure of the Brussels Parliament, in Belgium, since earlier this week, an incident that the authorities finally revealed on Thursday. This latest breach illustrates the growing vulnerability of governmental and legislative organizations to cyber threats of greater complexity.

Parliament President Bertin Mampaka said anything possible was being done to deal with the ongoing situation and that support had been sought and obtained from external cyber security partners. The full scale of the attack is not yet clear, but it has kept the parliament’s technical teams extremely busy, which implies a major and sophisticated security breach.

As of this writing, there are no replies to the hack attack on the core functions of Brussels Parliament. Planned committee and plenary meetings, set to go ahead, show the intention of the parliament to continue functioning despite the crisis. This implies that the attackers may not necessarily focus on the simple disruption of legislative operations, but may have other goals including data theft or surveillance.

The incident is the one in a series of cyber-attacks against Belgian government organizations. In March 2025, a pro-Russian hacker group named NoName057 took credit for Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against a number of top Belgian websites, which included MyGov. be portal and the website of the Walloon Parliament, in response to Belgium’s support for Ukraine.

While those were mostly about shutting down services without stealing data, the ongoing attack on Brussels Parliament’s internal IT systems indicates a deeper compromise. Belgium also announced a judicial investigation in the country in March into a state-sponsored cyberattack against its state security service’s email, which resulted in the hitchiking of external email traffic from 2021 until 2023.

The ongoing nature of these threats underscores the need for rigorous cyberdefenses and constant vigilance in securing government networks. Investigations in the nature and size of the Origin: Brussels Parliament attack. The investigations into the nature and scale of the Brussels Parliament attack are ongoing and efforts taken to address the security incident with the aim of the complete restoration of all compromised electronic services.
