Tanzania is abuzz with anticipation as it gears up to host a significant Artificial Intelligence (AI) Africa event next month in Dar es Salaam. Scheduled for July 28-29, 2025, this transcontinental forum is poised to be a pivotal moment for the nation and the wider African continent, fostering dialogue and innovation around the responsible and inclusive adoption of AI.
The event, which is being spearheaded by the National ICT Commission (ICTC), aims to empower local startups, shape crucial policy frameworks, and strengthen Tanzania’s capacity in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. Dr. Nkundwe Mwasaga, the ICTC Director General, emphasized the timely and significant nature of this initiative, highlighting AI’s increasing role in everyday life.
“AI is unlike previous information technologies—it touches everyone. It affects not only end-users but also innovators, students, public servants, private sector players, and even farmers,” Dr. Mwasaga stated at a recent press conference.
Tanzania has already taken proactive steps in integrating AI into its core functions. Dr. Mwasaga revealed that the country’s judiciary quietly began using AI tools last year, demonstrating a practical commitment beyond mere discussion. This forward-thinking approach sets a positive precedent for the upcoming forum, which will operate under the theme: “Shaping the Future of Ethical Artificial Intelligence and Data Governance for Inclusive Socio-Economic Development.”
The forum’s agenda is expected to delve into critical areas such as AI literacy, data governance, policy and regulation, and the ethical implications of AI development.
Discussions will aim to deepen public understanding of AI’s potential impact on national progress, particularly emphasizing the importance of data ownership in driving technological advancement. The event is a strategic move to leverage AI’s potential to drive innovation, competitiveness, and ultimately, socio-economic transformation across Africa.
With a strong focus on inclusive development, the AI Africa event in Tanzania is anticipated to foster collaboration, bridge existing digital divides, and ensure that the benefits of AI are accessible to all communities.
It signifies Tanzania’s commitment to positioning itself as a leader in responsible AI adoption on the continent, safeguarding societal well-being while harnessing the transformative power of this groundbreaking technology.
