In a significant stride towards shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI) governance, the Cyril Shroff Centre for AI, Law & Regulation at Jindal Global Law School (JGLS), O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU), was officially launched today at the historic Law Society of England and Wales in London. This landmark event, graced by the presence of a distinguished Harvard Law Professor, marks India’s first Centre of Excellence exclusively dedicated to the intricate intersection of AI, law, and public policy.
The Centre, established through a transformative ₹15 crore endowment from Mr. Cyril Shroff, Managing Partner of Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, underscores a visionary commitment to advancing ethical AI regulation and fostering access to justice globally. Anchored at JGLS, India’s top-ranked law school, the Centre aims to spearhead interdisciplinary research, executive education, and international collaborations.
Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor of JGU, highlighted the Centre’s forward-looking approach. “The launch of the Cyril Shroff Centre for AI, Law & Regulation represents a bold step in the evolution of legal education and technological innovation,” he stated, emphasizing JGU and JGLS’s commitment to harnessing AI for justice, human dignity, and democratic values.
Mr. Cyril Shroff reiterated India’s crucial position at the confluence of law and technology. “AI can be a powerful equalizer – transforming access to justice, speeding up legal processes, and making governance more efficient,” he remarked, advocating for innovation coupled with inclusion. He expressed hope that the Centre would emerge as a hub of ideas and leadership from the Global South, influencing global regulatory thinking.
A prominent Harvard Law Professor, David Wilkins, lauded the initiative, stating, “Artificial intelligence is not just a tool for lawyers – it is transforming the very architecture of legal systems. Institutions like the Cyril Shroff Centre are essential to ensuring that AI is integrated into the rule of law responsibly, ethically, and equitably.” He further noted JGLS’s unique position to lead this global conversation due to its commitment to academic excellence and international engagement.
The Centre’s ambitious mission includes conducting rigorous interdisciplinary research, offering executive and professional education programs, and actively engaging with international bodies like the OECD, UN, and EU to contribute to globally harmonized regulatory approaches. As India emerges as a top digital economy, the Cyril Shroff Centre is poised to play a pivotal role in building institutional capacity for AI law and governance, shaping a future where technology serves the public good responsibly.
