A concerning new report from Check Point Research reveals a significant escalation in cyber attack activity worldwide during the second quarter of 2025. Globally, organizations experienced an average of 1,984 weekly cyber attacks, marking a substantial 21% increase compared to Q2 2024. This surge underscores a rapidly worsening threat landscape, with Europe witnessing the most dramatic regional spike.
Europe saw its weekly average of cyber attacks jump by a staggering 22% year-over-year, indicating a growing vulnerability across the continent. While regions like Africa and Asia-Pacific recorded higher overall volumes of attacks, Europe’s sharp increase highlights a concerning trend attributed to factors such as geopolitical instability, fragmented regulatory environments, and a high concentration of valuable data.
The education sector continues to be the hardest hit globally, averaging an astonishing 4,388 attacks per week – more than double the worldwide average. This sustained targeting is often linked to underfunded cybersecurity defenses and the wealth of sensitive student and staff credentials that are ripe for exploitation. Government and telecommunications organizations also faced intense pressure, recording 2,632 and 2,612 weekly attacks, respectively, due to their critical infrastructure and access to sensitive information.
Ransomware remains a dominant and destructive threat, with approximately 1,600 global incidents publicly reported via “shame sites” in Q2 2025. North America accounted for over half (53%) of these reported cases, with Europe experiencing 25%. Industries such as business services, industrial manufacturing, and construction and engineering were particularly impacted by these financially motivated attacks.
Experts emphasize the urgent need for organizations to adopt a “prevention-first” cybersecurity strategy. This includes implementing advanced threat detection, robust endpoint protection, complete user education, and embracing zero-trust security frameworks. As cyber threats continue to evolve in sophistication and volume, a multi-layered, proactive defense is no longer an option but a critical imperative for organizations aiming to safeguard their digital assets and maintain operational resilience.
