In a historic first, artificial intelligence models from Google DeepMind and OpenAI have achieved gold medal status at the prestigious International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025. This breakthrough marks a significant leap in AI’s reasoning capabilities, demonstrating their ability to tackle highly complex mathematical problems previously thought to be exclusive to human intellect.
Both Google’s advanced Gemini Deep Think model and an experimental reasoning system from OpenAI successfully solved five out of the six challenging problems presented at the competition, securing 35 out of a possible 42 points – precisely the cutoff for a gold medal. This achievement is particularly remarkable as both AI systems operated end-to-end in natural language, producing rigorous mathematical proofs directly from the problem descriptions, all within the demanding 4.5-hour time limit of the competition.
While Google DeepMind formally collaborated with the IMO, having its performance graded and certified by the official committee, OpenAI opted for an independent evaluation, with three former IMO medalists unanimously grading their model’s solutions as gold-worthy.
The success at the IMO, an annual competition for high school students globally, signifies a major advancement in the field of AI. Experts believe this demonstrates that AI is rapidly approaching a point where it can serve as a powerful collaborative tool for mathematicians and researchers, potentially accelerating discoveries in various scientific fields. Junehyuk Jung, a math professor at Brown University and visiting researcher at Google DeepMind, stated that the ability to solve hard reasoning problems in natural language will “enable the potential for collaboration between AI and mathematicians.”
This year’s performance builds on Google’s previous showing, where its AI secured a silver medal. The improved speed and accuracy of the models underscore the exponential progress in AI development. While five human contestants achieved perfect scores at the IMO this year, and humans overall still outperform AI, the gold medal win for these AI models represents a pivotal moment, hinting at a future where human ingenuity and artificial intelligence work hand-in-hand to push the boundaries of knowledge.
