GLOBAL GROUP Ransomware Claims Breach of Media Giant Albavisión
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Albavisión, a prominent Latin American media conglomerate, is reportedly the latest victim of the emerging GLOBAL GROUP ransomware gang. The cybercriminal collective has claimed responsibility for a significant breach, alleging the theft of 400 GB of sensitive data and issuing a 15-day ultimatum for negotiations. Should Albavisión fail to engage, GLOBAL GROUP threatens to publicly release the exfiltrated information.

Headquartered in Miami, Albavisión operates an extensive network across Latin America, encompassing approximately 45 television channels, 68 radio stations, print publications, and around 65 movie theaters in 14 to 15 Spanish-speaking countries. The alleged breach, discovered on July 28, 2025, underscores the escalating threat posed by ransomware groups to critical infrastructure and high-profile organizations.

GLOBAL GROUP is a relatively new player in the ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) landscape, having emerged in early June 2025. Despite its nascent status, the group has quickly garnered attention, claiming responsibility for 17 victims across diverse sectors globally, including healthcare and automotive services. Albavisión marks its 29th claimed victim, indicating a calculated shift towards targeting media entities.

What sets GLOBAL GROUP apart is its adoption of an AI-driven negotiation tool, employing chatbots to facilitate communication with victims, particularly non-English speakers. This sophisticated approach aims to streamline extortion processes and potentially increase the psychological pressure on compromised organizations. While the specific ransom demanded from Albavisión remains undisclosed, previous incidents involving GLOBAL GROUP have seen demands reaching substantial figures, with one case observed by EclecticIQ involving a demand of 9.5 BTC, approximately $1 million at the time.

The attack highlights the increasing vulnerability of media companies, which are often targeted not only for financial gain but also for their potential as platforms for misinformation or disruption. Cybersecurity experts emphasize the critical need for robust defense mechanisms, including advanced threat detection, employee training to combat social engineering tactics, and complete incident response plans. As the deadline looms, the media industry watches closely to see how Albavisión will navigate this evolving cyber threat.
