Saudi Arabia has launched HUMAIN Chat, a landmark conversational AI assistant, signaling a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s ambition to become a global leader in artificial intelligence. Powered by a homegrown large language model (LLM) named ALLAM, the application is designed to be “Arabic-first,” providing a culturally attuned and linguistically precise AI experience for the more than 400 million Arabic speakers worldwide.
Developed by Humain, a company backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), HUMAIN Chat is the debut product from the company’s new suite of AI services. The launch represents a strategic step in Saudi Arabia’s “Vision 2030” plan to diversify its economy and foster a knowledge-based society. Humain CEO Tareq Amin hailed the launch as a “historic milestone,” emphasizing that the platform was built by Saudi talent in the Kingdom, showcasing its capacity for developing globally competitive technology rooted in local values.
The core of HUMAIN Chat is its flagship model, ALLAM 34B, which was trained on one of the largest Arabic datasets ever compiled. The model’s development involved a team of over 120 AI specialists, with half of the team being women. This focus on local talent and gender equality underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to building a robust and inclusive AI ecosystem.
Beyond its strong Arabic language capabilities, which include understanding various dialects from the Gulf to the Maghreb, HUMAIN Chat also offers seamless bilingual switching between Arabic and English within the same conversation. The app integrates real-time web search for up-to-date information and is fully compliant with Saudi Arabia’s Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL), with all data hosted securely within the Kingdom.
While models like ALLAM may not aim to rival the scale of global giants such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, they are seen as crucial for addressing a long-standing gap in generative AI for Arabic speakers. By providing a culturally intelligent platform that is grounded in local heritage and values, HUMAIN Chat aims to serve a user base historically underserved by mainstream AI tools. The company plans to roll out the application across the wider Middle East before a global release, with ongoing development and refinement based on user interaction. The launch of HUMAIN Chat positions Saudi Arabia as a key player in the development of sovereign AI and strengthens its role as a regional technological hub.
