In a significant move to address the escalating demand for specialized skills in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence and data landscape, 2U, a global leader in education technology, today announced an expanded partnership with IBM to introduce six new technical microcredentials on its global online learning platform, edX. These programs are meticulously designed to empower working professionals with the in-demand expertise needed to thrive in today’s AI-driven economy.
The new microcredentials offer practical, job-aligned training across critical areas of data science, artificial intelligence, and software engineering. Blending live instruction, self-paced learning, and peer engagement with personalized support from instructors and advisors, these programs deliver a premium learning experience that balances flexibility with structured development.
Enrollment is now open for the first three programs, with cohorts commencing in October 2025:
- IBM Data Analyst Certificate (10 weeks): Builds foundational analytical skills for professionals seeking to advance or transition into data-focused careers.
- IBM Data Science Certificate (10 weeks): Encompasses the entire data science process, from data collection and statistical analysis to machine learning using Python and industry-standard tools, including hands-on projects and an exploration of ethics.
- IBM Applied AI Developer Certificate (6 weeks): Focuses on designing and deploying AI solutions with an emphasis on practical application, responsible innovation, and current trends in generative AI.
Three additional programs, Software Engineer, Generative AI Engineer, and DevOps Engineer, are slated to open for enrollment in the coming months. Each program is based on an IBM-developed curriculum and materials, led by subject matter experts in IBM products and technologies, and incorporates peer-to-peer learning and hands-on capstone projects. These intensive programs require an average of 12 hours of work per week and are priced between $1,900 and $2,500.
The launch comes at a critical juncture, as PwC research indicates that skills in AI-affected roles are evolving 66% faster than average, underscoring the urgent need for accessible and relevant upskilling opportunities. This expanded partnership builds on IBM’s longstanding history of innovation on the edX platform, including being the first corporate partner to offer MicroBachelors® programs.
