Amazon has just unveiled a suite of three new AI-powered technologies, underscoring its relentless pursuit of the “warehouse of the future” by focusing on increased automation, efficiency, and worker safety across its vast operations. The most notable announcements include the introduction of the Eluna AI Agent for warehouse management and Augmented-Reality (AR) glasses for delivery drivers. The Eluna AI Agent is an advanced system designed to function as an additional operations teammate, processing both real-time and historical data from fulfillment centers to provide operational insights in natural language. Its primary goal is to help managers anticipate bottlenecks, optimize human deployment by answering complex queries like where to shift personnel, and streamline workflows, thereby reducing the cognitive load on employees. Currently being tested in a Tennessee fulfillment center, Eluna aims to free up managers from analyzing dozens of dashboards, allowing them more time for coaching and problem-solving.
In the “last mile” of delivery, Amazon is rolling out smart glasses, sometimes referred to as ‘Amelia’ in development, for its delivery associates. These AR glasses leverage AI-powered sensing and computer vision to project essential information directly into the driver’s field of view, creating a seamless, hands-free experience. Once a driver safely parks, the glasses automatically activate, guiding them to locate the correct packages, providing turn-by-turn walking directions to the doorstep, and enabling them to capture proof of delivery without having to constantly check a smartphone. This innovation is expected to significantly cut down on delivery time—with early tests showing a potential savings of up to 30 minutes per shift—while simultaneously enhancing driver safety by keeping their focus on their surroundings. Future versions are anticipated to include features such as real-time defect detection for misdelivered packages and alerts for environmental hazards like pets.
