Cursor Has Poached 2 Top Names From Anthropic: Report
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In a significant move highlighting the escalating battle for top-tier AI talent, Anysphere, the parent company behind the popular AI-powered coding platform Cursor, has reportedly lured away two prominent figures from Anthropic’s “Claude Code” team. The poaching of Boris Cherny, who led the development of Claude Code, and Cat Wu, its product manager, signals Cursor’s aggressive strategy to enhance its offerings and potentially integrate advanced “agentic” features.

The news, initially reported by The Information, reveals that Cherny will assume the role of chief architect and head of engineering at Anysphere, while Wu will become the head of product. This acquisition is particularly noteworthy given that Cursor extensively utilizes Anthropic’s AI models, including the highly regarded Claude AI, to power its coding platform. Many developers currently favor Anthropic’s Claude Code for its superior coding capabilities, driven by models like Claude Opus 4.

The departure of such instrumental figures from Anthropic’s dedicated coding unit suggests a strategic pivot for Cursor. Cherny himself has reportedly confirmed that the new hires will focus on developing “agent-like” features for Cursor, designed to automate complex, multi-step coding tasks. This move could see Cursor directly integrate the sophisticated agentic magic that has made Claude Code a strong competitor.

This development unfolds amidst a broader, intensified talent movement across the AI industry. Major tech giants like Meta have been actively recruiting accomplished AI engineers and researchers with lucrative packages, sometimes reaching up to $100 million, to bolster their “super intelligence” initiatives. The competitive landscape underscores the immense value placed on expertise in large language models and AI development.

While some industry observers speculate on the implications for Anthropic, which has seen its revenue surge, the recruitment highlights the fierce competition for talent that can drive innovation in the rapidly evolving AI sector. Cursor’s bold recruitment of these key individuals from a major partner and competitor signals its ambition to solidify its position as a top AI-powered coding solution.
