EQS-News: Northern Data Group Opens advanced AI & HPC Data Center in Pittsburgh
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Northern Data AG, one of the world´s largest providers of solutions in the field of High-Performance-Computing (HPC), is commissioning its latest HPC data center near the northern Swedish town of Boden.

This highly-located site, which is being run by its subsidiary Ardent Data Centres, is part of a major expansion of the – Northern Data AG – North American footprint and is expected to serve as a major hub for high-performance computing workloads.

Recently acquired in early 2024, the Pittsburgh data center recently was retrofitted to ensure high density, high speed, and sustainable compute environments. It will have 2.4MW of IT capacity at launch with further capacity to be added phase by phase until it reaches a total of 20MW.

Situated in Kansas City, Kansas, the facility is a showcase for cooling capabilities driven by the use of rear door heat exchangers (RDHx) and direct-to-chip (D2C) liquid cooling. This new concept pursues an impressive Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of down to 1.15, reflecting the company’s sustainability and performance goals.

This new data center is designed to meet the accelerating computing needs of AI model training, machine learning and other HPC applications. It’s infrastructure is designed for GPU clusters, so we have the power and cooling to support the most demanding computations.

Pittsburgh’s strategic position offers ideal access to major US eastern hubs with less than 10ms latency and the area is known for abundant clean power sources such as hydroelectric power and wind.

John Hoffman, COO of Northern Data Group: “The launch today is an important milestone for Northern Data’s ambition to be one of the top global providers of AI infrastructure. Our focus on strategically located sites, incorporating the latest in data center technologies and our modular design approach, gives us access to substantial growth opportunities.

Pittsburgh will be home to a key facility to support innovative companies across a range of industries – from AI start-ups to industry leaders in advanced manufacturing, energy and life sciences.

This investment not only strengthens Northern Data Group’s global portfolio, which has the possibility of yielding access to 850MW of HPC-ready data center capacity, but also adds to the rapidly growing technology and innovation sector of Pittsburgh.
