Recognizing the growing urgency surrounding responsible technological development, the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO) has announced the launch of its inaugural Summer School dedicated to “Ethical AI Practices.”
This timely initiative aims to equip a new generation of professionals and researchers with the critical frameworks and practical tools needed to navigate the complex moral and societal implications of artificial intelligence.
At FLACSO’s main campus in Quito, is designed for participants from diverse backgrounds, including computer science, law, philosophy, social sciences, and public policy. It underscores FLACSO’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on global challenges, particularly those impacting the Global South.
Addressing AI’s Societal Footprint
As AI technologies become increasingly integrated into daily life, from urban planning to public health and judicial systems, concerns around algorithmic bias, data privacy, accountability, and the future of work have escalated.
FLACSO’s Summer School directly addresses these issues, moving beyond theoretical discussions to explore tangible strategies for embedding ethical considerations into the entire AI lifecycle – from design and development to deployment and governance.
The curriculum boasts a robust lineup of international and regional experts who will lead sessions on topics such as:
- Understanding Algorithmic Bias: Identifying and mitigating inherent biases in data and AI models.
- Data Governance and Privacy in the AI Era: Navigating regulations like GDPR and developing robust data protection strategies.
- AI and Human Rights: Examining the impact of AI on fundamental rights and freedoms.
- Ethical Frameworks for AI Development: Exploring various ethical guidelines and their practical application.
- AI Policy and Regulation in Latin America: Analyzing regional approaches to AI governance.
- Case Studies in Responsible AI: Learning from real-world examples of ethical successes and failures.
A key highlight will be interactive workshops where participants will engage in hands-on exercises, analyzing real-world AI dilemmas and proposing ethical solutions. The program also emphasizes collaborative learning, encouraging participants to share perspectives and build a network of like-minded professionals committed to shaping a more equitable and just AI future.
FLACSO’s Ethical AI Practices Summer School represents a significant step towards building capacity for responsible innovation in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.
