Hong Kong’s commitment to a greener, smarter future takes a significant leap forward with the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) announcing the full digitization of its highly successful GREEN$ Electronic Participation Incentive Scheme (GREEN$ ePIS), effective April 1, 2026. This move is set to revolutionize recycling habits across the city, making it more convenient and rewarding than ever before.
The GREEN$ ePIS, designed to encourage cleaner recycling by offering incentives for using the GREEN@COMMUNITY network, has already seen remarkable success, with approximately 1.06 million users. A significant 87% of these users currently utilize the mobile app, paving the way for a smooth transition to a completely digital system.
Under the new fully digitized scheme, citizens will no longer need to visit GREEN@COMMUNITY facilities solely to redeem physical gifts. Instead, the GREEN$ mobile app will become the central platform for managing points and accessing an expanded array of rewards. This includes redemption at over 500 supermarkets and retail outlets, as well as opportunities for free MTR tickets and local eco-tour experiences. This broadens the scheme’s appeal and integrates recycling incentives seamlessly into daily life.
The EPD is actively encouraging existing physical card users to switch to the mobile app by offering an extra 50 GREEN$ points for those who return their cards and transition between August 1 and September 30, 2025. While physical cards will cease operation on April 1, 2026, the EPD has assured that existing physical cardholders without smartphones will still be able to use their accumulated points by registering their cards at designated GREEN@COMMUNITY facilities. Staff will be on hand to assist with app installation and demonstrate the e-point redemption features, ensuring inclusivity.
The digitization is a key component of Hong Kong’s “Smart Recycling System” and broader smart city initiatives. By leveraging technology, the EPD aims to enhance operational efficiency, streamline data collection for better program monitoring, and ultimately boost recycling rates. The success of the e-reward redemption option, including a significant increase in MoneyBack point conversions, indicates a strong public appetite for digital convenience.
Beyond individual benefits, the fully digitized GREEN$ scheme will continue to facilitate charitable donations, allowing users to support various organizations. This strategic shift is expected to further embed environmental responsibility into Hong Kong’s digital fabric, fostering a more sustainable and eco-conscious community.
