In a major breakthrough against cybercrime, the Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Wing has dismantled a sophisticated international SIM box network operating from Chennai. The operation led to the arrest of three individuals and the seizure of dozens of SIM boxes, illegal telecommunication equipment, and thousands of SIM cards, preventing significant financial losses and national security threats.
The bust was the result of a month-long investigation initiated after intelligence reports pointed to an illegal Voice over IP (VoIP) exchange operating in the city. The suspects were running a “SIM box,” which is a device used to route international calls through local SIM cards. This process allows them to bypass legitimate international gateways and convert international calls into local ones, enabling them to fraudulently earn revenue while causing massive losses to telecom service providers and the government.
According to a senior police official, the arrested individuals were part of a larger network with international links. The SIM boxes seized were capable of holding hundreds of SIM cards at once, allowing them to handle a high volume of illegal calls. The police also recovered multiple laptops, modems, and other equipment used to manage the fraudulent operation. The suspects had rented several properties to operate their illegal business, constantly changing locations to evade detection.
The operation highlights the growing threat posed by illegal telecom exchanges. These networks are not only a source of financial loss but also pose a significant security risk. By masking the origin of international calls, they can be used by criminal and anti-national elements for illicit activities, including terrorism, narcotics trafficking, and extortion.
